NILE MA in Professional Development for Language Education

The NILE MA in Professional Development for Language Education is a flexible, modular postgraduate programme for experienced language teachers, teacher educators, academic managers and other professionals working in ELT or wider language education.

The programme is offered by NILE in partnership with, and validated by, the University of Chichester. It is designed for professionals who want to deepen their specialist knowledge, strengthen their academic and practical expertise, and support their career development in language education.

Programme Structure

The MA consists of 180 credits:

Students may complete the MA flexibly and have up to six years to finish the full programme. Each taught module is followed by a tutor-supervised assignment, allowing participants to connect academic study directly with their own teaching or professional context.

Principles of Language Teaching (30 credits)

Advanced exploration of TESOL methodology, pedagogical theory, and evidence‑based teaching practice. Focus on classroom decision‑making, learner engagement, and contemporary approaches to ELT.

Second Language Acquisition (30 credits)

In‑depth study of how learners acquire English, including cognitive, linguistic, and sociocultural perspectives. Students evaluate major SLA theories and apply them to real teaching contexts.

Curriculum & Course Design (30 credits)

Designing effective TEFL/TESOL programmes, syllabi, materials, and assessment frameworks for diverse learner groups. Includes needs analysis, learning outcomes, and quality assurance.

Research Methods in TESOL (30 credits)

Training in academic research design, qualitative and quantitative methods, data analysis, and ethical considerations. Prepares students for the dissertation and future academic work.

Dissertation (60 credits)

A supervised independent research project demonstrating advanced academic inquiry and contribution to TESOL practice. Students investigate a topic of professional interest and produce a 10,000–15,000‑word dissertation.

This structure follows the standard UK Master’s degree framework.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Teachers who already hold the Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma in TESOL, together with an undergraduate degree, may be exempt from the core module. Other qualifications and professional experience may also be considered for credit exemptions.
