We have summed this up below and hopefully it will serve as a useful information guide for anyone interested in the teaching role.

There are many roles, responsibilities and boundaries related to the role of a teacher, tutor or trainer. They can include the following:

Role of a Teacher:

•has to be able to deliver his or her lesson effectively

•the lessons themselves need to be engaging/interesting and appropriate

•feedback should be provided to the learners

•learners can expect to be supported

Responsibilities of a Teacher:

•the teacher needs to be well-informed of the latest developments in the sector

•Identify learner needs

•Plan and prepare all lessons and resources

•Mark assessments and make assessment judgements

•Adhere to legislation such as to health and safety, equality and diversity and safeguarding

Boundaries a Teacher must consider:

When working with learners:

•Teach without discriminating or stereotyping

•Maintain the confidentiality of learner information

•Act professionally and with integrity

When working with other professionals:

•Only undertake activities as part of the teaching role. Do not undertake activities that are part of another professional’s role
